A makeshift memorial honoring a young man who gunned down a police officer in Jersey City on Sunday has come under fire for its blatant support of the killing of a law enforcement official.

Officer Melvin Santiago was shot to death by Lawrence Campbell after the 23-year-old rookie cop was ambushed outside a 24-hour Walgreens at around 4 am on Sunday morning.

Reportedly, Campbell told a witness to watch the news because he was "going to be famous," just minutes before shooting Santiago in the head, killing him instantly. The 27-year-old criminal was then brought down by a hail police bullets.

Instead of honoring the fallen officer, the memorial in Jersey was visited by locals mourning the death of Campbell. Friends of the killer wrote messages such as "Rest easy," "Thug in peace" and "See u on the other side" on T-shirts which they taped to the wall.

The shooter's widow, Angelique Campbell, garnered further ire after she released some controversial comments stating that if her husband had to die, she wished he had taken as many police as possible to the grave with him.

Although she later apologized for the statement and voiced her condolences to the Santiago family, her regret has fallen on deaf ears, at least as far as the young cop's family are concerned.

Alex McBride, Santiago's stepfather, voiced his disgust towards Ms. Campbell's statement as well as the memorial set up for her husband. McBride said that the thug is "not a hero," and later referred to him as "a piece of s---."

Monday evening police did their best to remedy the situation by dispersing those gathered at the memorial. Although someone had taken down the shirts, they were later returned to the memorial by the cop-killer's sister Lavana Campbell, 30, and brother, Lamar Campbell, 33.
