U.S. Senate Democrats oppose the proposed amendment made by bipartisan lawmakers from Texas on the 2008 immigration law, deeming it to be "too broad."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the media on Tuesday that he would not support the intended amendment on the immigration law as a response to the flood of undocumented immigrant children entering the country from the southern border.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar have planned to introduce the amendment they named the HUMANE Act, which aims to quicken the immigration hearing process and give the immigrant children without legal claim to stay in the country the choice to voluntarily go back to their home country without going through the immigration system.

The bipartisan duo wanted their amendment to be included as a pre-condition to President Barrack Obama's requested US$3.7 billion emergency funding with Sen. Cornyn citing that he "couldn't vote for this supplemental without the reforms."

However, many Democrats in the Senate consider fast-tracking deportations are a mistake though some do not agree. This division in the Upper House may delay to have the legislation moved before August's recess.

The Democrat Senate Leader sees the proposal as "too broad" because according to him, it covers plenty of other issues irrelevant to the crisis at the border. On the other hand, there was no indication that the Democrats have proposals of their own to solve the problem any time soon.

Reid warned his fellow Democrats at a private meeting to refrain from making any decisions not until they are briefed by the Administration on Wednesday although some were not able to avoid making any comments on the issue.

"It basically undermines the due process rights of a child that exists under existing law," New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez claimed telling the media that undermining those rights are "unacceptable" for him.

Meanwhile, Senator Ben Cardin told reporters that immigrant children should not be brought to the borders to begin with explaining that the government should turn their attention to what's leading unaccompanied youths to run away from their countries.
