BMW Recalls 1.6 Million Cars Worldwide For Faulty Airbags

German automaker BMW has recalled its 1.6 million cars worldwide that have airbags made by Takata Corp. saying that if these are sent out, they could rupture and injure passengers.

Following other automakers, BMW said it wanted to take down the current passenger airbags in their 3-series cars with the model years between May 1999 and August 2006 and replace them.

The recall was also made in addition to the regional recall request made by US safety officials.

BMW Spokesman Dave Buchko said that the company did the right thing in deciding to recall the vehicles and replace the passenger airbags.

Buchko said that the latest recall will affect around 574,000 cars in the U.S., 450,000 in Germany and about 189,000 in the United Kingdom.

He added that last year alone, the company recalled about 50,000 cars in the U.S. for the same issue.

An additional recall was made by BMW on its 26 Mini cars and one BMW 2014 i3 model.

Buchko said that although the  company was unaware of any accidents related to their vehicles' airbags, they, nevertheless, are taking extra precautions by recalling the cars and replacing the passenger airbags.

More than 12 million cars worldwide with Takata airbags from different car makers had been recalled over the past five years.

Takata Corp is a Japanese company supplying airbags, seat belts, steering wheels, and other auto supplies to car makers worldwide.

Earlier, a regional recall request was called by U.S. safety regulators after receiving reports of airbags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico, injuring six passengers.

The regional recall affected Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, Ford, Chrysler and Mitsubishi.
