This Smart Feeder Tracks Eating Habits of Cats; Uses Facial-Recognition Software

Bistro cat feeder

A cat lover in China has developed a really smart cat feeder that can monitor many cats.

Called "Bistro," the cat feeder built by cat lover Mu-Chi Sung uses facial-recognition software to recognize cats.

Bistro is a smart cat feeder equipped with a feeding tray having a load sensor, a food hopper, a camera, a weighing scale, and a water bowl with a load sensor.

Bistro collects data on a cat's drinking and eating habits. The information collected is then sent via WiFi to the cat owner's phone.

The live video feed on a smartphone allows the cat owner to monitor his cats.

Mu, however, needs more money to launch Bistro commercially. Bistro is currently halfway to its $100,000 funding goal on Indiegogo with 30 days left.

So far, about 300 cat owners are backing the project.

Bistro can be a boon for cat owners, especially those who own a large number of cats.

Sung was inspired to build Bistro by the sad fate that befell one of his cats. He has three cats: ZongZong, Feifei and Momo.

One day, Sung found Momo paralyzed and in pain. A vet said Momo was suffering from pancreatitis, a condition that caused the cat not to eat food for several days.

Momo was eventually saved, but his hind legs had to be amputated. Sung was totally unaware of Momo's condition since he owned multiple cats.

The whole experience left Sung with bitter memories. Haunted by the by the fear that one of his beloved cats could again fall sick without his knowing it, Sung decided to act.

He opted to use technology to save the lives of his cats, and cats owned by other persons, as well. The result of his love of cats was Bistro.
