600 Students Expelled In Widespread Cheating In India Schools

Cheating in school has taken a whole new level in India, where parents go as far as scaling school buildings just to help their children cheat in exams.
In the eastern state of Bihar, 600 students were expelled in widespread cheating. Parents and friends climbed up school buildings to sneak in cheat notes through windows. Police said many of those caught smuggled textbooks to be used for cheating.

Scenes of parents doing the spiderman-style cheating tactic, had left police officers watching in awe from stations not far from the school. Policement felt helpless. Videos and photos had quickly gone viral.
While school cheating was an old problem in India, Bihar's education minister P K Shahi said it has grown on a large scale. Shahi said those expelled comprise nearly half of the 1.4 million students taking the grade 10 school finals.
"Three to four people helping a single student would mean that there are a total of six to seven million people helping students cheat," Shahi said.
The education chief also urged the families to help, as he pointed out, the government can't do it alone.
"Is it the responsibility of the government alone to manage such a huge number of people and to conduct a 100 percent free and fair examination?" Shahi added.
Officials say cheating was rampant particularly in rural areas where slots for college education were few, resulting in fierce competition.
But what shocked many was the fact that parents risk their lives to help their kids cheat.
The malpractice was seen as just part of a huge problem in India's education system, where widespread teacher absenteeism and limited school buildings remain a concern.
Last month, dozens of cheating grade 12 students were also expelled and their parents were detained.
