Pharrell On Final Verdict On 'Blurred Lines' Song: Claims Jury Made A Huge Mistake

Pharrell Williams made an appearance in the United Nations World Happiness Day last Friday, but for the 'Happy' singer, there was still a cloud that shrouded the sky.

The case filed against them by Marvin Gaye's family, stressing that the 'Blurred Lines' song was a copy was finally declared by the court as the final verdict.  However, for Pharrell, he thinks the jury made a huge mistake and probably misunderstood copyright infringement, according to USA Today.

"It was shocking," said Pharrell, when asked about how he felt about the final verdict.

The court's final decision awarded Marvin Gaye's family an ample amount of US$7.3 million for the copyright infringement of Gaye's song 'Got To Give It Up'.

"I think when you look back at it. I think the jury voted on emotion. This is my opinion, I feel the verdict was based on emotion and not the real true issue, which was copyright infringement," he further added.

Pharrell also gave a warning on how this verdict can affect the music industry. Before the verdict was given, the singer-songwriter repeatedly emphasized how Gaye's music inspired him to write songs.

"The verdict handicaps any creator out there who is making something that might be inspired by something else. This applies to fashion, music, design, anything. If we lose our freedom to be inspired, we're going to look up one day and the entertainment industry that we know it will be frozen in litigation. This is about protecting the intellectual rights of the people who have ideas," said Pharrell, in an interview with Financial Times via Rolling Stone Magazine.

Pharrell's legal representative reveals that they'll file an appeal.

"The case was about copyright infringement and three out of 22 notes does not denote copyright infringement. It's the law and so we believe that the law will be upheld, so we're not worried," Pharrell finally concluded.
