The founders of WhatsApp could make billions more if they don’t hate advertising

According to an article today from the U.S. business and technology news website - BusinessInsider, "Acton and Koum are making millions because they are the creators of an app called WhatsApp. It's a text messaging replacement." However, they could make billions more if "they do not hate advertising".

The two founders of WhatsApp make money in two ways. The first way is they charge iPhone users a one-time $.99 fee when they download the app. The second way is they charge Android users $.99 every year after the first year. According to The Wall Street Journal reports, "250 million people use WhatsApp every month."

We could make an easy calculation to figure out how much money are the two founders making - 250 million people paying $.99 once or annually adds up to a lot of money, and this equals to millions and millions of dollars.

According to the article from BusinessInsider, it has offers two suggestions for the two founders if they want to make more money.

First, they can "potentially make a lot more money over time by taking venture capital investment and growing WhatsApp into a larger corporation. Two industry sources tell that late stage startup investors would love to fund Acton and Koum's project, giving it a valuation north of a billion dollars."

Second, based on several reports, the founders can also make billions more if they sell their app to large companies like Google or Facebook.

However, the two founders have refused to choose either suggestion. And none of them have explained why. But according to the report, "Google, Facebook, and venture capitalists would each demand the same thing for their money: that WhatsApp sell advertising."

However, the two founders of WhatsApp both hate advertising.
