Slingbox M1 is the additional member of Sling family that retails at US$149. It replaces Slingbox 350 issued in 2012.

Compared to Slingbox 350, Slingbox M1 is smaller and faster and has an integrated Wi-Fi and Ethernet. If users connect it with a satellite or cable box with a built-in DVR, M1 enables access to the DVR and plays back recordings remotely.

Along with the M1, Sling Media chose to rebrand the flagship Sling device as SlingTV from Sling 500.

SlingTV and Slingbox 500 both havie the same hardware but differ in a significant software update that positions a new on-screen TV guide above the interface.

The TV guide shows ratings for movies from Rotten Tomatoes, recommended content, TV episodes and movie guides, and real-time sports scores.

Sling Media's goal is to turn ordinary TV into a smart TV without customer's paying fees for the upgrade.

M1 also includes a selection of third-party streaming apps like Blockbuster On-Demand and Dishworld.

Owners of a Slingbox 500 will be able to get a free software update to turn it into SlingTV. Retail price for SlingTV is US$299.

The company also changed its mobile apps. The Slingplayer app for Android, iPad, and iPhone helps users set up the Slingbox M1 using their phones.

It also supports Apple TV and Roku which extends the cable or satellite box to another area of the house.

Slingbox is recommended for people who want easy access on TV anywhere.
