Boxing great Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao will be returning to the ring to face undefeated American Chris Algieri at the Venetian Macao on November 22.
The deal is done and Pacman is all set to defend his welterweight title on pay-per-view (PPV) at the Cotai Arena in Macau, China against junior welterweight title holder Algieri.
Chris Algieri, 30, out of Huntington, New York has a spotless professional boxing record of 20 wins with eight of those via knockout. He just won the welterweight title last June 14 against former champion Ruslan Provodnikov who was also trained by Pacman's coach Freddie Roach.
The upset may have sparked and motivated Pacman into avenging his coach, according to Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter and Chief Executive of Top Rank promotions, who confirmed of the upcoming fight.
Pacquiao told Arum that he is 100 percent for it and that he saw Algieri's fight against Provodnikov.
"Manny said he thought it would be a good fight and he was okay with fighting Algieri," Arum said.
Algieri had a meeting with Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing and Artie Pellulo of Banner Promotions Tuesday to iron out the details of his fight against Pacquiao.
"We were able to sit down and go through everything Chris wanted to go over and put everything together. He's gonna beat Pacquiao," DeGuardia said.
Algieri is a former professional kickboxer who has won the International Sport Karate Association Welterweight and World Kickboxing Association Super Welterweight championships. He retired in 2007 to become a professional boxer.
Terms of the fight were not yet disclosed but Algieri is said to be extremely happy with the overall package and that he was very pleased with the total compensation especially when he just took a US$ 100,000 purse against Provodnikov.
Pacquiao signed a two-year extension with Top Rank Promotions and should be making a hefty profit, most likely in the US$20 million plus range. Algieri will be getting at least US$1.5 million which also includes an upside on PPV sales.
