As expected, Virginia police said on Monday that there is no evidence to support the charge by a female student of the University of Virginia (UVA) that she was allegedly gang raped in a fraternity house.
Rolling Stone magazine, which initially published the article, had already doubted the veracity of the claims of the student. Police Chief Timothy Longo said they could not even confirm that an event occurred at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house where the rape allegedly took place.

However, Longo did not discount the possibility that something terrible happened to Jackie, only the cops did not conclude anything happened.
Rolling Stone said it would publish the result of its own probe of the 9,000-word article written by Sabrina Rubin Elderly and published in November 2014, which sparked a national debate on campus rape cases. It also led to the suspension of all fraternities on campus and the roll out of an independent review of school policies on sexual misconduct.
The magazine was criticized for not trying to contact the alleged abusers of Jackie, which eventually led to an apology from the magazine staff. Steve Coll, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, led an independent review of the article.
The cops also interviewed over the past four months university officials, fraternity members and two best friends of Jackie. Numerous tries to identify the man named Drew, supposed to be the date of Jackie, failed.
Longo, however, did not discount the possibility of reopening the case if new evidence becomes available.
Many fraternities in different universities may be heartened by the findings in UVA because while it did not discount the possibility that rape occurred, Greek-letter organizations somehow get some respite over the bad press they have been receiving such as what happened in Oklahoma University where two students were expelled for a racist video.
