goTenna, a Brooklyn-based company, is marketing a radio device considered a modern day "walkie-talkie."
Users of the device called GoTenna (capital "G") will be able to send and receive messages directly on their smartphones without going through cellular networks. The device uses low-energy Bluetooth signals and an app to pair goTenna to smartphones.

GoTenna is basically a small, two-watt, low power radio transceiver. It's powered by a lithium-ion battery with an estimated battery life of about 30 hours when continuously used and a total of three days with irregular use.
Unlike the regular walkie-talkies, privacy won't be an issue as communications are encrypted. GoTenna can be charged via USB.
goTenna claims the GoTenna has a maximum range of 50 miles. GoTenna creates an on-the-fly encrypted network between any other GoTennas in range, making it a smartphone equivalent of a CB radio. It also has the ability to "shout" messages to other goTenna users within range.
It's too big to be placed inside a pocket but it can be easily clipped to a backpack or a belt. The size of the device is based on its need to have a long antenna.
GoTenna's set to retail at US$299.99 but has an introductory price of US$150.
According to goTenna CEO Daniela Perdomo, the idea for GoTenna started during Hurricane Sandy when cell towers went down everywhere.
