Based on appearance alone, the HTC One M9 looks the same as last year's M8 except for a few subtle differences.

The new M9 still sports the aluminum look and the screen size is still 5 inches with 1080 pixel resolution. The loudspeakers are placed above and below the screen and still possess the same exceptional quality of the previous version.

The M9 was supposed to correct two flaws in the M8 model. The body finish of last year's model was so slippery people had trouble holding it. The M9's shiny finish has made the phone less slippery to hold.

Unfortunately, HTC still hasn't been able to improve the camera on its flagship model. The M8 was criticized for having an "Ultra Pixel" rear camera that couldn't compete with other high end smartphones like Apple and Samsung.  HTC tried to compensate by adding a secondary sensor that didn't help much.

This time, the M9 sports a 20 MP high resolution sensor as its main camera, ditching the secondary sensor. The front camera now has the Ultra Pixel and can take good pictures of selfies in low light settings.

The rear camera has plenty of pixels. The software enables the user to take quick photos and the controls are easy to use.  That's the only good thing about the M9 rear camera.

Images taken by the M9 suffer from noise reduction and details are blurry. A number of pictures taken in by the M9 appear to be worse than those taken by the M8.

Except for the rear camera, the M9 is a fast Android smartphone. It has the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3 GB of RAM. The M9 runs the Android 5.0 Lollipop version as well as the latest HTC Sense software.
