Future Smartphone Displays Will Analyze Your Spit

In collaboration with glass maker Corning, the researchers at Polytechnique Montreal, Canada, are very close to the successful creation of a kind of smartphone display that will be able to analyze fluids on its surface.

With these 'smart' displays you will be able to check if you have cold, by simply spitting on the display. Now, while this idea might seem disgusting in a broad sense, it will provide a number of benefits pertaining to medical, security, and environmental sphere. Mobile phones equipped with such displaus will play a big role in health and fitness. And given the way tech giants such as Google, Samsung, and Apple are rolling out fitness and health apps and gadgets, these 'smart' displays will easily attract them.

The researchers working on this technology are very certain that these displays will take the tech-health industry to a whole new level, allowing diabetic patients to monitor their sugar levels, and giving the info on the quality of air at a specific location, on the fly.

A very short-pulse laser, scientifically known as femtosecond laser, is used to create waveguides inside a special glass, called Gorilla Glass. These waveguides are so small that they are invisible to a naked eye. Then different kind of tiny lasers are then used to shoot beams into them, which create sensors. For now, the team has been able to successfully create two types of tools into the displays- an authentication system, and a temperature sensor.

Corning stated that Apple will be its valued customer, especially since the company has been providing the tech giant Gorilla Glass for its iPhones since its launch in 2007. Also, the company is planning to launch an improved version of Gorilla Glass at the end of the present year.
