T-Mobile Launches Real-Time Coverage Maps

(Photo : T-Mobile) T-Mobile has launched a new real-time map for coverage.

T-Mobile has an issue with its network. Compared to AT&T and Verizon Wireless, it lacks the spectrum or scope the two largest carriers have invested over the decade.

That means customers will find high speed in some areas while in other places there will be none at all.

To make sure customers know what kind of service is available in their area, T-Mobile has created a new crowdsourced map based on its 55 million customers, how fast the service is and the density of users in the area.

It has split the U.S. into 980 million 100 x 100 meter chunks, meaning users can get in extremely close to see if their neighborhood offers T-Mobile. This also means routes to work, regular areas to hang out and all other potential places are check out before grabbing a T-Mobile contact.

This is another one of CEO John Legere's "Un-Carrier' moves that on the outside look like a bad move for T-Mobile because it exposes weaknesses, but may win over customers through being open and transparent rather than devious.

Having these real-time crowdsourced coverage maps means T-Mobile customers get a better read on the situation in an area, rather than asking support and finding out the state is supported by the carrier.

T-Mobile won over nearly 9 million customers in 2014 with the new Un-Carrier moves. While this didn't net a huge amount of profit, it showed that being less evil is a good thing.

The most recent T-Mobile deal changed the way business contacts work, offering a simple way for companies to buy mobile contracts for every employee.
