Microsoft Music, Video Apps Previewed on Windows 10

Microsoft has launched the new Music and Video apps for Windows 10 preview, allowing "insiders" to get a first look at the new interface and store for the apps.

The two apps have been rebranded without the Xbox moniker. Under Satya Nadella, it looks like Xbox will have less of an influence on entertainment as shown by the recent layoffs of Microsoft's entertainment studio.

Interestingly, this is the exact opposite of what Microsoft's rival Sony is doing. Most of its services are being rebranded with the PlayStation moniker, including new music services.

Both apps feature a refined look that fits with the Windows 10 aesthetic rather than the black and green on the Xbox. Microsoft has said it will take time to finish the apps and they're still in beta testing for the next few months.

At least it shows Microsoft is still willing to sell different pieces of entertainment even though it won't be opening studios to fund this entertainment on Windows 10.

It's a smart move for the short term with Nadella working to cut costs wherever he can and focus on the mobile and cloud. Halo TV shows and movies don't seem optimal when focusing on those two markets and could decrease funding for Xbox.

Microsoft will then have to explain why it acquired Minecraft creator Mojang for $2.5 billion if it stopped funding Xbox, however. So, for the next few years, we expect Nadella to leave the gaming scene alone.
