‘Apes’ Edges for Second Week at Box Office as ‘Purge,’ ‘Planes,’ ‘Sex Tape’ Come Close

A science fiction film sequel, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" topped three new movies to maintain its throne in Box Office for the second week.

Another sequel, "The Purge: Anarchy," joined the rank with $28.4 million ticket sales from its $34.1 million sales on an opening weekend. The low-budget Americal horror-thriller film was directed by James DeMonaco as a follow up to last year's "The Purge" with stars Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo and Zach Gilford. "Purge" which shows another kind of America where all crimes are legal for 12 hours had a $9 million budget from horror film producer Jason Blum.
Disney's 3D animated film "Planes: Fire & Rescue," took the third place from its release on July 18 with $18 million. The movie is a sequel to the 2013 animated film, "Plane," with the featured voice of Dane Cook, Ed Harris and Julie Bowen.
Cameron Diaz's comedy film, "Sex Tape," followed with $15 million sales.
'Apes' gathered $36 million domestic ticket sales throughout the weekend and one of the two summer movies who topped for two consecutive weeks, next to "Transformers: Age of Extension." The movie by 20th Century Fox collected $242 million sales since worldwide since its debut on July 11 with a domestic gross of $139 million for 10 days.
Fox News released a list of estimated ticket sales starting from Friday to Sunday at US and Canada as well the sales internationally. Below is the list for US and Canadian Theaters:
1. $36 million ($61 million international) for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"
2. $28.4 million ($420, 000 international) for "The Purge: Anarchy"
3. $18 million ($9 million international) for "Planes: Fire & Rescue"
4. $15 million ($3 million international) for "Sex Tape"
5. $10 million ($81.2 million international) for "Transformers: Age of Extinction"
