Apple Wants Programmers to Provide Their Own Streams for Internet TV Service

(Photo : Reuters) Apple has revealed yet another excellent quarter.
Apple might be planning a new route to stop internet service providers from tampering with speeds for its internet TV service by forcing the programming networks to provide their own streams.
Since most cable channels are owned by media corporations that have ties to the ISPs, it's unlikely these will see the same aggressive moves, forcing them to pay more for service.

HBO, for instance, is owned by Time Warner that has connections to Time Warner Cable and Comcast through the merger. That means HBO Now is not going to pay those ISPs in the same way a service like Netflix would.
At the same time, HBO can also be readily supported and promoted by ISPs as a new way to watch the shows. In a time where fewer people are buying cable and more are paying for broadband, it's clear companies like Comcast are starting to care more about broadband.
It's not clear what restrictions Apple will add to the streams. There are still no details on what advertising and business model Apple will use for its internet TV service. This means ads might be controlled by Apple and not the programmer.
"Apple's proposal isn't necessarily surprising," said Re/Code, "since video services that stream via Apple apps today -- including some of the networks Apple wants to work with, like Fox, CBS and Disney -- all "stand up" their own streams, by working with content delivery networks like EdgeCast."
Apple has Disney, AMC, ABC, HBO and a few other channels coming to the internet TV service, which is set to launch in June. Comcast has apparently dropped NBCUniversal, following disagreements with Apple on the set-up.
Even without NBCUniversal, Apple's internet TV service should offer more channels than any current service. Sony's PlayStation Vue has 84 channels, but Apple might be able to offer a more al-a-carte system with its available funds at a cheaper price.
Apple will also reintroduce Beats Music at WWDC 2015 in June alongside launching iOS 9 and a few other new service updates.
