What was meant to be a peaceful ride in a hot air balloon took a turn for the worst in Clinton, Massachusetts Friday night when  the flying vessel collided with power lines, injuring up to five people.

According to reports, the pilot of the hot air balloon was attempting to land in a residential area in the north side of town when he flew too low and collided with the power lines. It remains unclear why the navigator chose to attempt a landing in such a crowded area.

Videos of the incident show two separate explosions before the balloon finally makes contact with the ground. Officials reported that the basket of the hot air balloon caught on fire, causing burns and other injuries to five of the six passengers.

Witnesses of the spark-filled scene expressed surprise that all the passengers survived the incident as the ensuing explosions were extremely large.

Meteorologists confirmed that the weather did not contribute to the balloon's collision, citing low wind speeds and no jolting changes in weather or wind.

Minutes after the incident took place, weather balloons were released in Albany, Cape Cod, and Long Island. None of these noted any odd fluctuations in weather and revealed winds less than 20 mph in the lower 10,000 feet in the atmosphere.

Due to the gondola crash, close to 600 people in Clinton lost power immediately after. Authorities worked to quickly restore power and most residents had their lights back on the same day, although some had to wait until early Sunday to get power back.

It was later revealed that the balloon's pilot planned on landing the gondola in a yard located on Brook and Greeley Streets, and the FAA has confirmed that it will be opening an investigation into why the pilot choose to do so and what led to the unfortunate collision.
