Three Albuquerque Teens Bashed Heads of Homeless Men with Cinder Blocks

The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) has arrested three teenage boys accused of killing two homeless men who were sleeping.

The teens used cinder blocks to bludgeon the victims to death.

Aside from their heads being bashed in with cinder blocks, the men were also kicked, punched and beaten with a metal pole and stick.

At 8am on Saturday, the bodies of the victims were discovered by a passerby in a field near 60th and Central.

APD arrested 18-year old Alex Rios, 16-year old Nathaniel Carillo and 15-year old Gilbert Tafoya late Saturday.

They were identified by a third victim, Jerome Eskeets, who managed to escape.

According to Eskeets, the boys used black shirts as masks to hide their identities. However, he recognized one of the boys when he yelled at him as he ran away.

Police said that the attack was so brutal that police are now having a hard time identifying the men.

Simon Drobik, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, stated, "My question is: Who failed these kids? How did it get to this point? It was so violent. I was sick to my stomach. Homicide (detectives) had a hard time dealing with it."

According to the trio, the attack was spurred on by the break-up between Tafoya and his girlfriend.

Tafoya was apparently upset and the teens decided to take his anger out on the homeless.

Tafoya admitted that they have randomly assaulted as many as 50 homeless people this last year.

The APD is asking that those who have been victimized by the boys to come forward.

Ironically, Tafoya's family was once homeless. His father, Victor Prieto said, "It's awful to know and understand your son could do something like that. It's hard, you know, as a parent. You feel like you've failed."

The three teens are being charged with two open counts of murder, among other charges.
