Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will end all speculation about her political plans for 2016. Reports say she will announce her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the presidency this weekend.

The news hardly comes as a surprise because Clinton had been reported to have leased office spaces in Brooklyn Heights, New York, which would be her campaign headquarters. The leasing of a campaign headquarters is considered part of a campaign activity under federal rules, which also require formal declaration of candidacy within 15 days.

The Wall Street Journal and Reuters said that Clinton would make the announcement in social media, not in a press conference, reports Newsday.

The Washington Post said that the social media route is part of Clinton's new campaign slogan, which is "Think small."

This strategy would address her shortcomings in the 2008 run and would play to her strength by setting meeting with voters in smaller and intimate settings that are better places to demonstrate her humor, humility and expertise on policy.

While in the rival Republican Party, Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have formally announced their availability to be the official GOP candidate, no one has officially done that in the Democratic Party. However, there are talks that Vice President Joe Biden and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley may make a bid for the White House.

Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican who became a Democrat, and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb have former exploratory committees.

It would be a second attempt for Clinton who lost to Barack Obama in 2008. However, living in the White House is not new to her since she was first lady to former President Bill Clinton in the 1980s.

A win for Clinton would be historical in two aspects - becoming the first female president of the United States and the reversal of roles for the Clintons with Hillary becoming president and Bill becoming the country's first gentleman.

Recent surveys showed that while Clinton's popularity rating has gone down compared to two years ago, she is ahead of potential GOP rivals, notwithstanding the email controversy that failed to dent her chances of returning to the White House.

The AP reports that Clinton's initial campaign sorties would be in Iowa and New Hampshire, the first states to vote in the presidential primaries.

At least two more politicians are expected to join the GOP field. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is reportedly announcing his candidacy next week, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has already formed an exploratory committee.
