The ceasefire will allow investigators to access the crash site of the MH17, following a global outrage after investigators were barred from getting open access to the site.
Analysts and experts earlier said tampering of evidence was likely to occur considering that rebels were guarding the site.
Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the Donetsk People's Republic told journalists that they had decided to handover the black boxes to Malaysian officials since the boxes belonged to Malaysia.
A member of the Malaysian team extended their gratitude for the separatists' decision to hand over the black boxes.
The black boxes that were recovered were intact with only minor damages.
One black boxes contain the the conversation in the cockpit while the other one contains all the flight data.
It is not yet determined as to how useful these black boxes will be in determining the real scenario that occurred before the Malaysian plane was shot down by a surface-to-air-missile.
The Ukrainian military and Russian separatist rebels are blaming each other for firing the missile.
