While Katy Perry's Birthday makes you happy.

One Republic's Something I Need makes you sad.

American Authors' Best Day of My Life makes you optimistic.

David Guetta's Bad makes you angry.

Avicii's Wake Me Up makes you excited, and John Legend's All of Me makes you nostalgic.

According to the study, the songs possess certain characteristics that set the mood to feel specific emotions.

Optimistic and happy songs have some similar features, such as having positive lyrics and a major key.

Both sad and angry songs have minor key and negative lyrics, but angry songs have strong rhythm opposed to sad ones and also involve movement like happy ones.

Exciting songs are also similar to happy ones but with a stronger beat.

Fear-overcoming songs have major chords and positive lyrics, while nostalgic ones have sentimental lyrics; but both are slow and relaxing in nature.

In Spotify's study, listeners now understand better why popular songs influence the mood and how songs are effective to make listeners feel intended particular emotions.

However, in another study, some people prefer listening to sad songs yet ending up feeling positive.

A study by Japanese researchers shows that a phenomenon called "sweet anticipation" is part of the reason why listeners do not feel miserable after hearing sad music, despite perceiving it as tragic.

The study can be seen in Frontiers in Emotion Science.
