Netflix Reaches 60 Million Global Subscribers

Netflix has announced quarterly earnings for Q1 2015 and the results are better than expected, with 60 million subscribers globally and a $300 million increase in revenue.
The results show Netflix can still compete with services like Sling TV and PlayStation Vue, both import cable channels onto an internet-only service. It has also shown progress where other video streaming services like Hulu Plus continue to falter.

American viewers still hold the majority of the subscribers, with 40 million customers in the U.S. alone. Netflix has tailored a lot of its programming to the U.S. audience and expanded from the grassroots to overseas where it holds 20 million subscribers.
Even though the U.S. market is definitely the most important, many analysts believe Netflix is near saturation point. Considering Netflix has more subscribers than HBO on cable, it should start to slow down subscriptions over this year.
That means it needs to start investing heavily into overseas content. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings already wrote about a global service with no geo-location boundaries. This removes the need to use a VPN but that service is a few years from being realized.
Until that time, Netflix will continue to invest in local and global content for services in Europe, Latin America and Asia. It intends to reach 200 countries by 2016, another large goal investors seem interested in reaching.
Speaking of investors, Netflix stock has surged to $535 in after hour trading. It's the highest price for Netflix stock ever, going from an already high $475 on Wednesday. Analysts expect it to drop back to $500 over the coming weeks.
Netflix will continue to invest in original series like House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Marco Polo. These original TV shows have helped Netflix secure millions of customers and keep them loyal to the platform. We should expect even more in the near future.
In the coming months, the biggest announcement we can expect will not come from Netflix but from Apple. At WWDC, plans to launch a revamped interface for the Apple TV -- fit with catch up and featured TV shows from Netflix -- will reportedly be announced.
This might make Netflix even more popular as Apple looks to aggregate all of the popular streaming services under one interface. This interface will reportedly allow people to switch between live TV, catch up and other areas of entertainment, sports and movies.
