UN Takes Isis Off List of Hurricane Names

(Photo : Reuters) In an unprecedented move, the name Isis is retired from the list of hurriances because it bears the same name as a terrorist organization.
Let this be a lesson to terrorists everywhere: If you continue your evil ways, you won't get a hurricane named after you. The United Nations has struck a decisive blow in the global war on terror by removing the name Isis from its official list future hurricane names.
The U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on Friday that it had taken Isis off its list of hurricane names because it was deemed inappropriate due to the terrorist group of the same name, the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria or ISIS.

Apparently the U.N. didn't want to equate a terrorist group that has killed and displaced countless people with a weather phenomenon that often does the same exact thing.
While the retirement of hurricane names is rather common, in the past they have only been retired when the storm of that name was particularly deadly or destructive.
"Names are knocked off the list, which rotates every six years, if they are considered inappropriate if they caused too much damage and too much death," WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis told Reuters
For example, the name Sandy has been retired from the list of hurricane names due to the chaos and destruction the storm caused. The name Katrina was also retired because of the destruction it caused in New Orleans in 2005.
But this is the first time that a hurricane name was retired for sharing the same name as a terrorist organization.
The proposal by the WMO regional center was endorsed by the WMO Hurricane Committee, which is composed of experts from 27 member states and territories meeting in Costa Rica this week, reports Reuters.
The purpose of naming hurricanes is to reduce confusion when two or more storms occur at the same time. Prior to the name of hurricanes, there was often confusion when storm advisories broadcast from radio stations were mistaken for warnings for an entirely different storm hundreds of miles away.
According to the National Weather Service, for hurricanes, there is a list of names for each of six years - one list is repeated every seventh year.
However, the WMO has put itself in somewhat of a difficult position with the retirement of Isis. There aren't a whole lot of names in the English language that begin with the letter "I" and the WMO has already retired 11 of them: Ike, Inez, Ingrid, Ione, Irene, Iris, Isabel, Isidore, Isis, and Ivan.
