Being allowed to buy a limited amount of marijuana for personal recreational use is different from consuming the weed in public, Denver police reminded on Sunday to residents and visitors who showed up for the city's cannabis events.
The police tweeted that they do not want to be despised for being buzzkills at Colorado's 4/20 weekend. They urged the pot users to be responsible when using the weed they purchased by doing it in private places only and by assigning a driver who is neither high nor inebriated, reports Washington Times.

The annual 4/20 event is known as the biggest marijuana rally in the world that attracts vendors and visitors. The purpose why Denver holds it yearly is to "create a positive environment" where weed users could share anecdotes, acquire more knowledge about the industry and contribute to shaping opinion on other issues that the industry faces, said Miguel Lopez, the event organizer.
There is more to the two-day event than a legal excuse to get high by smoking their cannabis purchases. It also has a musical event, a concert by rapper Rick Ross on Sunday afternoon. Then there would be an after-party event from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. which requires tickets.
The bulk of the 60 citations that Denver police issued on Saturday were for consuming the cannabis in public. While April 20 is the official pot day in Colorado, no permit to gather in the city and the county building has been issued for Monday.
The police said they will issue citations if people who show up smoke their weeds in public.
Ironically, the University of Colorado will open its Boulder campus on Monday. University officials cited the no negative incidents the past three years on April 20 as the reason behind its open-Monday policy, said Chancellor Phil DeStefano.
The university admits allowing the celebration of 4/20 goes against the academic institution's mission to research, train and teach.
However, other groups such as Modolo Consulting still managed to be academic by conducting on Saturday a research aptly on the marijuana industry.
Lauren Croucher, a founding partner of the new company, said doing the research on 4/20 gives them the opportunity to see the beginnings of the industry at its birth place and to meet new people and learn from them, reports Denver Post.
