14 Million Bees Spill from Truck in Washington Highway: 'Everybody's Been Stung'

A truck accident led to the escape of millions of honeybees on a highway near Lynnwood in Washington State.

The semi-trailer truck rolled over along Interstate 5 over the weekend at 3:30 a.m., releasing some 14 million bees. Within an hour of the road accident, beekeepers were immediately onsite to round-up the dangerous honeybees.

The bees, however, became more restless and agitated when temperatures at the crash site started to rise. Firemen resorted to spraying and hosing down the boxes of hives with foam and water to slow down the bee attacks.

Local news media showed mounds of bee carcasses littering the highway. The State Patrol said everyone at the accident site was stung.

By 8:00 a.m. local time, a towing vehicle arrived and removed the upturned truck. Traffic, however, remained at a standstill during the whole morning as crews cleared the wreckage.

The Washington State Department of Travel issued a warning to all the drivers that morning to keep their vehicle windows and air vents tightly closed as they passed the bee boxes littered on the road.

Police told local media the truck was apparently exiting a junction when the driver lost control and hit a guardrail before the truck went rolling. The driver was unhurt.

Local police are now investigating the accident and are investigating if the speed of the truck was an issue. The driver could face traffic citations but there were no criminal charges linked to the accident.

The corner where the truck should have turned is notorious for being tricky and police said there had been several collisions at the intersection of I-405 and I-5.

The truck was carrying 458 hives with as many as 14 million bees that were being transferred from Sunnyside, Yakima County to a blueberry farm in Lynden, Whatcom County for pollination.

According to Seth Thompson from Belleville Farms, some 128 hives were salvaged from the wreckage.
