A team of researchers and engineers from the Oregon State University in the U.S. has developed a new technology that can potentially boost Wi-Fi bandwidth by 10 times or up to 100 Mbps.
The new technology, which uses light-emitting diode (LED) lights to transfer information, can be integrated with current Wi-Fi systems to diminish bandwidth problems, especially in crowded areas such as airports.

Thinh Nguyen, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Oregon State UNiversity along with assistant professor Alan Wang, has developed the first prototype of the technology called WiFO.
WiFO utilizes LEDs to create an invisible cone of lights about one square meter in which information can be received.
"I believe the WiFO system could be easily transformed into a marketable product, and we are currently looking for a company that is interested in further developing and licensing the technology," said Nguyen.
"In addition to improving the experience for users, the two big advantages of this system are that it uses inexpensive components, and it integrates with existing WiFi systems," Nguyen added.
Unlike existing Wi-Fi systems that divide bandwidth according to the number of users and devices, the new system has the ability to deliver around 50 to 100 Mbps for each user.
LED technology has been used in a wide range of applications such as street lights, traffic signals, automobiles, airplanes, light bulbs, televisions and laptops.
Mexican tech firm Sisoft Company recently developed a new technology called Li-Fi, which uses LED lamps to enlighten a large work space, while at the same time providing mobile internet access to users that come into the range of the light spectrum.
