Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner Apologize for Slut-Shaming Black Widow

Both Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner have issued their own statements regarding the video in which both of them made derogatory comments about Russian super spy, Black Widow.

In an official statement submitted to Entertainment Weekly, Evans explained that he and Renner were asked regarding the on going stories that Black Widow wants to be in a relationship with Captain America and Hawkeye and owned up to their actions by admitting they responded in an extremely "offensive and juvenile way that rightfully angered some fans."

"I regret it and sincerely apologize," he ended his statement.

As for Renner, he directly said sorry for joking tastelessly and offending fans. He explained in a statement also provided to Entertainment Weekly that he did not mean for his comment to be taken seriously and that he was simply poking some fun during a press tour which he described as "tedious and exhausting."

Evans and Renner sat down for an interview with British entertainment news website, Digital Spy, where they were asked about what they thought of fans' shipping Black Widow, portrayed by Scarlet Johansson to Captain America, played by Evans and to Hawkeye, played by Renner.

And with the news that the new Avengers movie is hinting at a romance between Black Widow and Bruce Banner, Mark Ruffalo's character, the interviewer asked them what they thought about the unlikely couple in the movie, to which Renner immediately responded with "She's a slut!" which caused Evans to laugh out loud, as he said "a complete whore."

The actors' use of derogatory labels has earned them backlash from fans, while others took no offense and even defended their comments by reminding everyone that it's simply a joke intended to shed some light on the general audience's eagerness to pair off Black Widow to the most currently suitable male Avenger.

Renner also earned more criticism when he made a follow-up joke about Black Widow having "a prosthetic leg anyway."

Avengers: Age of Ultron hits U.S. theaters on May 1, but is now showing in other countries.
