Yesterday, Yao Ming and his wife Ye Li took their three-year-old daughter Yao Qinlei to a school in Changping District of Shanghai. The family interacted with the children. This is the first public appearance of Yao's daughter. When being asked why they wanted to participate in these public spirited activities with their daughter, Yao said: "We want to teach our child a vivid lesson. Let her take a look at the ways of the world. And let her know how fortunate she is. In addition, I wish she can form a good habit of giving back to society since she is still a child."
As basketball players, both Yao Ming and Ye Li are very tall, but Yao Qinlei's height is not much different from other three-year-old children. Yao Qinlei wasn't shy when facing so many cameras. The vivacious girl walked around herself, after a while, she asked for a hug from mom. During the activity, when Yao Ming was doing push-ups, she took the camera from her mom to take a picture for her dad.
This activity is one of the series charity activities held by the Yao Ming Foundation. The Yao Ming Foundation was established in June of 2008 by Yao in response to the devastating 8.0 earthquake in Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008. More than 8,000 schoolrooms and 185 schools were destroyed during the earthquake. The Yao Ming Foundation has so far committed to rebuilding five schools in the earthquake region. The new earthquake resistant schools will provide top-level education for more than 1000 students, many of who will also board at the schools. Talking about the Yao Ming Foundation, Yao said they would try their best to improve the credibility and transparency of the foundation. He also welcomed the supervision from public.
