Facebook, Other Social Media Offer Help to Nepal Earthquake Victims

Facebook activated "Safety Check," a feature that inquires about people in the areas hit by the earthquake in Nepal, said CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
"When disasters happen, people need to know their loved ones are safe," Zuckerberg said on Facebook, which launched this feature October last year.

Facebook initially determines your location through your profile or "Nearby Friends," a feature that allows you to check in. If it detects you're within the range of the disaster, it will prompt a safety check on you.
You will receive a notification asking you if you're safe. If you answer "I'm Safe," this status will be posted in the newsfeed. Your loved ones that have been notified of your safety can also mark you "safe." It sends out notifications to Facebook friends that you are indeed safe.
Moreover, Nepal Earthquake 2015, a Facebook group, was set up to foster sharing of information. Here, loved ones can share photos of missing persons, and citizens of the world may be directed in their donation and relief efforts.
Apart from Facebook, Google also activated "Person Finder" as its own aid to Nepal victims.
This tool collects information on persons likely affected by the disaster. Relatives and friends may upload information about their missing loved ones while emergency aides may determine one's safety status.
At the moment, about 35,000 people likely affected in Nepal have been entered in the application.
Viber also offered free overseas calls to Nepalese using "Viber Out," a representative announced on a Facebook post. The suspension of billing will allow them to make calls to non-Viber numbers. Viber is also working on making calls to Nepal free, according to the post.
About 2,200 deaths were confirmed following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Kathmandu Valley last Saturday. A magnitude 6.7 aftershock between Kathmandu and Mt. Everest caused avalanches and 17 deaths among climbers.
