3 must-see places in Namtso to shake your soul


1. Tashi Dor 

Tashi Dor is a peninsula protruding into Namtso Lake from its southeastern corner, in the Tibetan Region of China. On the peninsula is a small monastery and several hermit caves. Nomadic herders frequently camp on the peninsula, and many species of migratory birds make their home there too.

Craggy rocks and upstanding woods cover all over the peninsula, with colorful and exotic landscape. There are numerous stalagnates and rocky pinnacles on Tashi Dor peninsula. Some are like pines and some are like proboscises. Moreover, this peninsula is sprinkled with lots of secluded caves. Some caves look like long tunnel, some caves are round, and other caves are full of stalactites.


2. Mysterious Duoqia Temple

Although there are only 15 monks in Duoqia Temple, it is the largest temple by Namtso Lake. The temple was built on the island in the lake. There are many caves on the island; therefore it is a good place to practice Buddhism. It's worth mentioning there is a mystery about Duoqia Temple: every night, the voice of carving mani stones can be heard on the island. But when visitors go further to see what's happening, the sound will stop suddenly. After visitors walk away, the mysterious sound will appear again. Mani stones are stone plates, rocks or pebbles, inscribed with the six-syllabled mantra of Guanyin Bodhisattva as a form of prayer in Tibetan Buddhism.


3. Namtso Grassland

Namtso Grassland is enchanting with its vastness, herders' camps, and countless flocks and herds. There grows some famous valuable medicinal plants such as Chinese caterpillar fungus and snow lotus flower in Namtso Grassland. In the caves at the foot of the hill on Zatsi Island in Lake Namtso, there live many lamas who practice Buddhism with the support of local Tibetans. Visiting the lamas should definitely be a stop on any trip to Lake Namtso.
