Another sports power couple split up after Russian tennis star Maria Kirilenko announced that she called off her engagement with Washington Capital's winger Alexander Ovechkin last July 21, 2014.

Maria Kirilenko, the No. 93-ranked tennis player shocked sports fans when she released a statement last Monday about ending her two-year engagement to the hockey player.

She did not go through the details of their breakup, but she stated that she was the one who called everything off after much consideration.

"I have decided to terminate the engagement. Reasons are many, but do not want to go into details. I'll Say one thing: our relationship completed, but I respect [Ovechkin] as a person and athlete and I sincerely wish him continued athletic success."

Further news on the breakup are rumors that the former Wimbledon champion ended the relationship over Alexander Ovechkin's Instagram photo with another girl.

Maria Kirilenko denied these rumors with only a scoff to offer at the idea that the photo her former fiancé had with Russian gymnast Karolina Sevastyanova was the cause of their ended engagement.

On an interview with Sovetsky Sport where the subject was broached, she said that she has seen a lot of pictures of Ovechkin in the company of other young ladies and that she has gotten used to it. To the tennis star, it was just a normal thing as they were public figures whom people want to take pictures with.

Maria Kirilenko found it ridiculous that people would think that the breakup was caused by mere photos when she had decided to call the engagement off long before the photos appeared online. She also added that there were deeper and more significant reasons why she decided to do so.

The tennis star also added that she wouldn't add any more details except that Alexander Ovechkin has certain habits and behavior that she doesn't consider worth tolerating anymore.
