Katy Perry's Concert Outfit Stirs Controversy in China

During her concert in Taipei this week, Katy Perry stirred her audience by wearing a glittery light green dress covered with sunflowers during her performance. Sunflowers just happen to be Taiwan's anti-China emblem during their protests last year, called the "Sunflower Revolution," which, like Hong Kong's "Umbrella Movement," was intended to separate itself from the sovereign rule of the Chinese government.

Another controversial garb, which Perry wore, was the flag of the Republic of China (Taiwan), which she draped over herself while singing "Unconditionally." The flag, which was banned by China in the 2012 Olympic Games, symbolizes the island's separation from China.
According to Taiwanese newspaper Liberty Times Net, Perry's politically charged pro-Taiwanese costumes moved some members of the crowd to tears. However it was unclear if Perry truly intended to wear the costumes as a political statement. Before Taiwan's concert, Perry had used the sunflower theme last June in Raleigh, N.C. with her backup singers dressed as sunflowers.
According to some observers, Perry's "political" costumes could infuriate the Chinese government and might affect her Chinese market, which is a huge chunk of her concert and album sales. China has been known to ban artists in the past that they consider as "threats" to the national sovereignty.
After her performance in Taiwan, Perry will play in Macau, considered to be a special autonomous region of China. Earlier this month, the pop star toured Mainland China in Guangzhou and Shanghai where she also wore the sunflower dress.
On Sina Weibo, the Chinese social media, one wrote a critical post against Perry saying that she was speechless over "Fruit Sister," a nickname they gave Perry for wearing costumes that usually involve fruit). The post said that it was annoying for performers to intervene in other countries' politics.
While others sympathized with Perry saying, "Poor Fruit Sister."
