A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, causing a small tsunami to rise near the epicenter, cutting off power lines and damaging walls.
The said tsunami rose at an estimated height of 1 meter (3 feet) in the town of Rabaul, according to Chris McKee, the Geophysical Observatory's assistant director at Port Moresby. Fortunately, the earthquake did not cause considerable damage in Papua New Guinea, according to USA Today.

Moreover, the tsunami did not rise above the normal level of high tide, McKee added.
The earthquake hit Papua New Guinea at a 42-kilometer (26-mile) depth, around 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Kokopo in the northeastern part of the South Pacific island nation. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed this after releasing different estimates of the quake's magnitude, the report relayed.
The powerful earthquake, however, cut off the power supply in Rabaul, including the Geophysical Observatory office. In Kokopo, some buildings and infrastructure were damaged and walls sustained cracks, but no injuries were reported, McKee detailed.
Based on the report of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, a tsunami with a wave of up to 1 meter (3 feet) could rise within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the earthquake's epicenter. But they cancelled the tsunami warning after a few hours, said the report.
McKee also said no unusual wave activity was spotted in other areas in Papua New Guinea outside of Rabaul. In addition, they are predicting a minimal tsunami threat with waves less than 0.3 meters (1 foot) high.
Papua New Guinea is situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is a string of seismic faults forming an arc located in the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are very common.
The epicenter of the earthquake that hit Papua New Guinea on Tuesday is located in the same area as the previous two quakes that struck the region last week, the report stated.
