A man in Alabama has sued a hospital for mistakenly amputating his penis in what was supposed to be a routine circumcision procedure, which he checked in for last month.

Johnny Lee Banks, Jr., 56, filed a lawsuit before the Jefferson County Court on Tuesday against the Princeton Baptist Medical Center for the botched surgery.

According to his lawyer, John Graves, not only did Banks wake up without a penis but no doctors or medical staff in the hospital  informed him or explained to him why his penis had been entirely cut off.

"My client is very devastated," Graves said.

Aside from the hospital, the other defendants named in the lawsuit were Baptist Health System, which does business as Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Urology Centers of Alabama PC, and Simon-Williamson Clinic PC.

The other defendants named in the lawsuit were doctors Vincent M. Bivins and Alan C. Aikens.

The suit alleged that Banks was in the care of an urologist at the Urology Center of Alabama but that a different doctor performed the surgery which resulted in the operation going awry.

Bank said he was not warned that a simple circumcision, which is the removal of the foreskin, could end up with his penis getting amputated.

He alleged that the doctor failed to seek the help of another doctor when things got out of hand during the procedure. He charged the doctors for negligence for the botched surgery.

Although Banks did not give a specific monetary amount for damages and compensation, the lawsuit stated that Banks has spent a considerable amount of money trying to recover and heal from the painful situation that he is in.

His wife, also a plaintiff in the lawsuit, is suing for monetary damages resulting from "loss of consortium," or the inability of her husband to have sex with her because of the loss of his penis.
