Global Carbon Dioxide Tops the 400 PPM Mark; Climate Change Alert Issued

For the very first time, the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide reached above 400 parts per million - 440 ppm was first recorded in the Arctic region in the year 2012 and this level was also recorded in Hawaii in 2013. Now, the level surpassed the 400 ppm mark and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Observatory raised a climate change alert warning.

The CO2 level reached this threshold around 5 million years ago, which could make this a serious cause of worry, states The Washington Post. According to NOAA, the presence of 400 parts per million of CO2 gas is a very normal thing as the temperatures around the world continue to rise.
Global Warming is on the rise these days and this contributes in a major way to the rising temparatures and these rising temparatures in turn, effect the CO2 level of the atmosphere. The level of global warming is increasing due to a number of causes like the acidification of oceans and the release of the hospital gases into the atmosphere.
Reaching the 400 ppm mark only means that the atmospheric greenhouse gases are on a steady increase, but exceeding that mark is making the scientists to quickly think of something to reverse this process, states The Huffington Post.
The scientists explain that even if the human contribution towards the emission of carbon dioxide is stopped, it will still take a lot of time for this gas to be cleansed from our atmosphere.
According to James Butler, the director of NOAA's global warming monitoring department, about 80 percent of fossil fuel emission will need immediate stoppage to control the emission of carbon dioxide. NOAA is responsible for measuring the levels of carbon dioxide in 40 remote locations, including places like volcanic sites and islands.
Since the levels of CO2 are increasing faster than ever now, the scientists are urging many countries to join hands and deal with this situation together.
