Key And Peele Create A Utopian Town In 'Negrotown'

Comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, known for their satirical comedy that tackles social issues in America, has created another musical clip for their Comedy Central series. Known as "Key & Peele," the two comedians are attempting to raise awareness about racism, an ongoing issue in the United States.

Aptly titled "Negrotown," the clip comes in wake of racial problems, especially the recent death of Freddie Gray who was killed in Baltimore after being taken by police. Key portrays an unarmed black guy arrested by a white police officer for no reason.

In the video, Key is being led by the police to his cruiser and hits his head on the door frame. Another black guy, played by Peele, rescues him and takes him to another place in another space called, Negrotown - a town filled with black people wearing technicolored outfits singing and dancing together. The words of the song are full of innuendos about how black people are being unfairly treated these days.

In one part of the song, it says that in Negrotown, a black person can walk the street without being harassed and where a cab always stops when you need one. Or, it's a place where you can wear your hoodie without being shot. It is also a place where there are no trigger-happy policemen. In other words, Negrotown is a place where black people are treated fairly, like a Utopia where everybody is happy.

Key & Peele's video sketches often tackle political and racial issues including those that are about social status. Negrotown is by far their most politically-charged sketch so far.

The sketch comes just after the recent civil unrest in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray who was killed under police custody. It also hints at the death of other black people such as Trayvon Martin who was shot by a neighbourhood watch volunteer because he was wearing a hood, Michael Brown who was also shot and killed by a white police officer, and Eric Garner, who died from a choke hold by white police officers.
