(Photo : Kickstarter/Next Thing Co.) Use C.H.I.P. with LibreOffice to edit spreadsheets, create word documents, or craft presentations. It's all there.
A new CHIP sized computer is really cost-effective for just US$9. The Chip as it has been named runs on Linux and includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well.
The mini computer, which its creator, the Next Thing Company, is hoping to get off the ground through a crowd sourcing effort at Kickstarter, lets users play video games, do some word processing and yes, even check email. It features a 1GHz processor, 512 RAM, built-in Wi Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, a micro-USB and a regular USB and even an audio jack along with 4GB of flash storage.

Users can easily load a lighter version of Debian on it. All of this at just US$9 makes the Chip – US$19 with the VGA adapter and US$24 with the HDMI adapter – certainly one of the most interesting computers on hand. You can easily add PockectChip to it, allowing your small computer to have its own touch panel and a keyboard. The god thing is that you can always add on various features to the Chip.
According to some of the experts, the Chip is one of the best innovations in the field of Computers. The fact that the whole system operates on Linux, there will be a lot of features available to you.
"Out of the box, C.H.I.P. can connect over composite video, so you can use an old TV or a tiny screen you have," said Dave Rauchwerk, a Next Thing founder.
Kickstarter donors who choose to support C.H.I.P. development, with a $49 pledge, get a QWERTY keyboard and housing for the mini PC that boasts a 4.3-inch touchscreen to boot. At first, Next Thing aimed to raise US$50,000 for the initial production cycle through the fundraising effort that will end come June 6. It's surpassed that goal big time given that 7,532 supporters who have pledged US$359,088 as of Saturday.
The company has stated that the Chip will see the global market in less than a year. As Next Thing Co.’s CHIP is backed by a well established Haxlr8r company, the device’s mass manufacturing will not be any problem for the developers.
