The New Zealand Herald reported May 11 that Cumberbatch was also not in attendance at the BAFTA TV Awards ceremony - he is reportedly taking care of his pregnant wife Sophie Hunter.
Cumberbatch's "Sherlock," however, took home the BAFTA TV Radio Times audience award, which is voted for by the public.
ITV series lead Jason Watkins for "The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies" won the award. The actor took the stage to talk about the real-life story of the murder of Joanna Yeates and to dedicate his award to daighter Maude, who has passed away in 2011 from a blood infection called sepsis.
"The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies" is a two-part drama about the arrest and subsequent release of Christopher Jefferies, over claims that he killed landscape architect Joanna Yeates in 2010.
The night's win was Watkin's first BAFTA award. The TV series also took home the best mini-series award.
Other top BAFTA TV winners are Georgina Campbell as best actress for "Murdered by My Boyfriend"; Stephen Rea as best supporting actor for "The Honourable Woman"; Gemma Jones as best supporting actress for "Marvellous"; Jessica Hynes as best female performance in a comedy program for "W1A"; and Matt Berry for best male performance in a comedy program for "Toast of London."
"Marvellous" won best single drama; "Happy Valley" as best drama series; and "True Detective" in the international category.
"Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway" won as the best entertainment program and best entertainment performance for the second consecutive year.
On the broadcasting side, Channel 4 programs received the most awards, BBC News reported.
