Marvin Banks, 29, who was accused of shooting and killing two Mississippi police officers during a traffic stop Saturday, had a history of drug use, according to his mother.
Mary Smith, Banks' mom, said that her son's drinking had worsened in the recent years and that he was hearing voices in his head. She added that he would hopefully get help but did not. Now Banks is charged with capital murder after shooting and killing two police officers in Mississippi.

Also in the car during the killing were his girlfriend, brother, and friend. His girlfriend and brother were charged as accessories, while his friend faced an obstruction charge.
Smith said that when she saw the booking photos of Banks, she knew it was not right, reported the Associated Press.
"He was sick and out of his head and I tried to get him some help," said Smith while on the steps of the Forrest County Courthouse. Smith went to the court to find out more information about Banks' arrest.
Apparently, Banks had been smoking synthetic marijuana, which is also known as spice, every day.
"He was on that spice. He was on every drug there was. Spice, powder, marijuana, drinking," Smith said.
Four suspects have originally been charged in connection with the Mississippi shooting case; however, Banks was the only one charged with murder.
On Monday, Banks appeared in court and was charged with two counts of capital murder, as well as counts of grand theft auto and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Spokesman Warren Strain.
Banks had already been in state prison two times and had faced an unserved indictment on drug charges. In 2010, he pleaded guilty in possession of a stolen handgun. After serving about a year for the felony, he got a split sentence and was released from prison. However, he returned to prison after violating terms of his release.
He eventually faced a pending indictment on drug charges when the car he was riding was stopped, according to the Miami Herald.
Today Banks is accused of the deaths of officers Benjamin Deen and Liquori Tate. Deen was shot in the face and Tate in the back.
The Mississippi shooting unfolded Saturday night after Officer Deen, 34, stopped the car of Banks' girlfriend for a speeding violation just after sundown. He reportedly called for backup after finding probable cause to search the car.
At some point after Officer Tate, 24, arrived at the scene to help, the shooting began, and shots were fired.
Investigators are still mum about the motive that caused Banks to open fire. They also did not specify what role the other suspects played in the Mississippi shooting, as reported by CNN.
The recent shooting marks the first time in 30 years that an officer was killed while in the line of duty in Hattiesburg, according to Mayor Johnny DuPree.
