The U.N agency pushes that aside from adding this medicine on the essential list, its price should also lessen so that patients can avail them. They have to consider that most patients, who have hepatitis C,came from poor countries in the world.
Hepatitis C is one of the causes of immortality rate in the world. It affects about 150 million people around the globe and there are half a million people died every year. But the rate slowly decreases because of the discovery of new drugs like Gilead's Sovaldi, according an article published in Media Centre.
Though this medicine is already in the market for people with hepatitis C, patients from poor region still couldn't afford because of its Western price. Currently, the Sovaldi Pill already cost $1,000 in the USA.
According to Marie-Paule Kieny who is the WHO assistant director general, that they are doing their best to lessen the price of this medicine for low-income countries but they struggle to implement this because not everyone is cooperating with their advocacy. It is impossible now to make this medicine available globally and the public health benefits might reduce because of the current situation.
Though Gilead already give the medicine for a lower price in some poor countries, campaigners need to push it a little bit so that it will become accessible worldwide, specially to the third world countries.
The Model List of Essential Medicines has been used by all governments around the world that help them determine which medicine can they offer to its people once a disease or epidemic will occur. The list is always updated every two years.
