$9 Computer: Next Big Thing For Tech

C.H.I.P. on Kickstarter

When it comes to computers, $9 can get you a long way as a tech startup offers a computer at a price that no other company is able to offer.

Developed by Next Thing Co., the computer parading as a simple computer chip is called, aptly, C.H.I.P. and is described by Digital Journal as a computer that has been "built for wok, play, and everything in between." Fascinatingly powerful, the target demographic of C.H.I.P. includes everyone, from students to grandparents, from inventors to hackers.

Users should not expect a powerful computer, but for $9, the computer is given less credit than what it is due. Its hardware starts with a 1 GHz Allwinner A13 processor, 512 MB RAM, and 4 GB storage, as reported by StepFeed. Add in a USB and micro USB port, an audio jack that doubles as a video output that supports both VGA and HDMI, a built-in Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 and this simple setup allows users an array of tasks such as save documents, browse the Web via Wi-Fi, or even play games via a Bluetooth controller.

C.H.I.P. started out in Kickstarter, where it raised $200,000 in just one day of funding, exceeding their original goal of $50,000. Next Thing Co. managed to bring down expenses by ordering tons of processors from Allwinner.

The C.H.I.P. computer is available for $9. However, CBC News reported that for an additional fee of $40, the company also offers a device that can house C.H.I.P. and make it look like a smartphone with the capabilities of a Linux-based computer, complete with an 11-centimeter or 4.3-inch touchscreen, a keyboard, and a five-hour battery, calling it PocketC.H.I.P., and it has the uncanny and novel ability to use a pencil as a kickstand. There are other packages in varying price points, with some that include VGA adapters or even an HDMI adapter.

The first batch of orders will be delivered by the fourth quarter of this year.
