A news anchor from China Central Television was spotted wearing an Apple Watch and recently received flak in the Internet.

CCTV news anchor Wang Yinqi was spotted wearing an Apple Watch by a Web user while she was delivering her usual daily news report. The said user quickly posted screen grabs of the news anchor, which quickly spread on Weibo, reported Foreign Policy.

Different posts from the Twitter-like Chinese social media site accused her of showing off her wealth, with some criticizing that media should be more thrifty. Some speculations also arose that, being beautiful and just in her mid-20s, Wang is a mistress to a wealthy man.

Another news presenter from a different station commented in defense of the now-scandalized TV anchor.

The dress code for news anchors are not as particular as everyone thinks it is, said Yang Quan, a news reporter for Chongqing TV. She continued that it only caused scandal because the Apple Watch is a highly demanded product in China right now, and viewers will gravitate at it, as mentioned in Yibada. The reporter continued on how the main rule is not to distract the audience from the news being delivered.

However, it was not always like this. CCTV loosened their restrictions on news presenters in 2010, as mentioned by Want China Times. Now anchors and presenters can dye their hair, choose their own clothes, and just basically look neat and tidy; wearing a watch was never against the rules.

There were no comments from Wang as of press time, but Weibo is not stopping any time soon. If anything, it was never the intention of the news reporter to cause damage, and the viewers and Weibo users are exaggerating. China is growing at a fast pace, and so is the economy. This means more revenue for China in the coming years, thus the people's ability to spend on luxury items such as the Apple Watch.
