The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit in China to improve economic co-operation and build ties between India and China. But the two countries are in danger of being shaded by a mutual mistrust.

Prime Minister Modi met President Xi Jinping of China in Xian and will travel to Beijing and Shanghai, according to BBC News. Xian is the capital of the Prime Minister Modi's home province in Shannxi.

The ties between China and India are troubled because of a long-standing border dispute. According to Channel NewsAsia, the Sino-Indian talk would be dominated by issues including border dispute between China and India as well as economic co-operation and trade. China and India are currently in a long-running dispute as they both share an ill-defined border. Moreover, the two countries fought a brief war in 1962 regarding the dispute.

Prime Minister Modi said that he hoped the three-day visit would increase Asia's prosperity, BBC News reported. "I am confident my visit will lay the foundation for further enhancing economic co-operation with China in a wide range of sectors," the Indian Prime Minister tweeted last week.

Before going to Beijing on Thursday evening, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi will travel the Wild Goose Pagoda, an ancient Buddhist pagoda located in Xian, and will visit the Terracotta Warrior exhibition.

Disagreement between China and Indian sparked a brief war in 1962 known as the Sino-Indian Border Conflict, which covers over 3,500-km (2,175-mile) border in the Himalayas, according to a report by Reuters.

Prime Minister Modi has been keen to resolve the border dispute; however, it is said that there is no easy way to resolve the conflict which has been dated back to the colonial decisions of Britain about Tibet.
