Locals in Wenzhou located in East China's Zhejiang province were baffled and shocked by the discovery that the Wenzhou river had turned overnight into a shade of bloody red last week.
The residents discovered the uncanny color in the morning and according to some witnesses, the water was still normal in color around 4 a.m. However, the color shifted an hour later as it turned into a deeper shade of red.

Residents observed that the river did not emit any foul smell or taste despite the disturbing color. The residents nearby associated the event as an apocalyptic sign. There were no factories nearby that could have dumped industrial waste into the river.
A resident said that it scared some of the locals because the river was looking normal the day before. The river turning into "blood water" in just one night was frightening. This was the first time it happened in the area.
Another resident told local media that locals normally could catch fish and even drink the water because it was so good.
Wenzhou Environmetal Protection Bureau officials were already looking into this matter and have taken samples for analysis. They concluded that since industrial pollution can be ruled out due to the absence of factories nearby, it is possible that someone dumped dye pollutants into the river.
The river turned back into its normal color after about 12 hours.
In 2012, the Yangtze river also turned into a mysterious red, although people automatically blamed industrial pollution as the culprit. Also in 2011, two illegal chemical plants discharged their industrial waste into the Jianhe river in Luoyang, Henan province that changed the river's color into red.
Emily Stanley, professor of limnology at the University of Wisconsin, confirms that these phenomena are driven by pollutants where people may have dumped dyes that made rivers turn into a different color very fast.
