Robbie Lawler withstood Matt Brown on Saturday to emerge victorious via a unanimous decision, earning him another shot at the Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) welterweight title.
Lawler (24-10) stood toe to toe with Brown (19-12) as their fight at UFC on Fox went the distance. After the judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47, Lawler set himself up with another shit at the welterweight crown.
Lawler likewise halted Brown's rampaging streak, as the latter won seven consecutive bouts with the last one stopping Erick Silva in May.
Brown had to be transported to a nearby hospital immediately after the fight, as ringside doctors suspect he might have injured his hand in the fight. No official word on Brown's condition was available as of posting time.
The fight started out furiously in the first round but quickly slowed pace as each contender showed caution.
The only takedown of the fight happened on the third round which Lawler scored points on top. Lawler also hurt Brown later in the round with a kick in the body but was ruled low by referee John McCarthy.
The final round was crucial for Brown, sensing defeat he hit Lawler with some elbows and kicks to the body but Lawler was unfazed as he delivered a kick that knocked Brown over in the final minute which left Brown kneeling on the mat.
As for Lawler, Sunday's victory allowed him to set a rematch against welterweight champion Johnny Hendricks, who has not fought since their last meeting in March. Hendricks tore his biceps during the fight.
UFC president Dana White confirmed their upcoming fight but declined to say when it will take place.
Hendricks (16-2) was expected to return October, but needed more time to heal. He is anticipated to be ready for the title fight early next year.
Lawler, on the other hand, knocked out Jake Ellenberger in the third round at UFC 173 in May.
White praised both fighters saying that he did not expect the fight would last five rounds.
