Survey Says: One-Third of Americans Want Obama Impeached

A U.S. survey showed that 35 percent of Americans support impeaching President Barack Obama.

CNN and ORC International conducted the survey from July 18 to July 20, asking respondents if they think the president should be impeached.

The poll found that 13 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of Republicans surveyed are in favor of impeaching Obama.

Compared with figures from a CNN/Time poll in 1998, the percentage of respondents who want Obama impeached is significantly greater than the 22 percent of voters who supported impeaching President Clinton.

The new survey coincided with a senior White House aide warning that House Republicans might try to consider impeaching Obama.

Dan Pfeiffer, a top adviser to Obama, said the lawsuit that House Speaker John Boehner was seeking to file against the president has "opened the door to Republicans possibly considering impeachment at some time in the future."

The House of Representatives approved a bill on Thursday authorizing a lawsuit against Obama over a series of executive orders that Republicans say exceeded the president's constitutional authority.

Pfeiffer told reporters that the suit might eventually lead to Republicans initiating impeachment proceedings against Obama.

Also adding to the likelihood of an impeachment attempt in the House is a new executive action that Obama is planning to sign by the end of summer, according to Pfeiffer.

He said the action, which will reduce deportations of illegal immigrants, might make impeachment efforts more likely.

Republicans criticized Pfeiffer's comments, and analysts said they might be aimed at rallying Democratic supporters ahead of the November elections.

Michael Steel, a spokesperson for Speaker Boehner, accused Pfeiffer of playing "political games" by raising the issue of impeachment.

Steel said the White House should focus on solving the U.S. border crisis instead of "making matters worse with inattention and mixed signals."
