WSTL Finds Key Protein In Our Body To Cure West Nile Virus

Researchers from Washington University in St. Louis (WSTL) found out that the Interferon-Lambda can be an answer to the West Nile Virus (WMV).
According to WSTL, their research showed that larger amounts of Interferon-Lambda can tighten blood-brain barriers against viruses.

Interferon-Lambda is the key protein found in our body that establishes multi-faceted antiviral responses, NCBI said.
They explained that the protein has apparent possibilities in becoming an antiviral therapeutic agent that can cure not just WMV but also certain types of cancer.
CDC explained that mosquitoes usually transmit WMV to humans and there are no known symptoms for the virus.
They also added that there were only about 1 to 5 people that develop fever and less than 1 percent of the patients that develops the virus had fatal neurological illnesses.
The University said that this protein could also help in fighting faulty immune cells that can attack the brain and cause diseases like multiple sclerosis.
Robyn Klein, a medicine professor from the University, explained that they have identified new antiviral function that doesn't directly attack viral infections in the brain.
For this research, Klein and his colleague Michael Diamond had a closer look at the effects of the West Nile Virus on mice.
They found out that the barrier that they created keeps immune cells, drugs and pathogens out of the brain.
Diamond explained that interferon-lambda can treat lower concentration of the virus in the brain among mice.
Despite this, there were still problems that arise such as the virus entering the brain by the time the symptoms of the viral infections became serious.
However, researchers believe interferon-lambda can better influence the pathogens that get into the brain.
It is also better than other forms of interferon that causes side effects like fever, chills and fatigue.
Diamond explained that interferon-lambda has fewer receptions which causes fewer side effects. There is also the possibility of the protein to influence other protective barriers in the body like those that can be found in the skin and the gut.
