Hong Kong is world’s No.1 with an average smartphone price of $814.60

According to informed source from Taiwan, Gartner, Inc., an American information technology research and advisory firm carried out a survey recently. Gartner investigated 48 countries and regions in the world. Then it comes into a conclusion that Hong Kong ranks in the first place with an average smartphone price of $814.60, with South Korea, Taiwan, the United States and Poland ranked from second to fifth with prices of $643.30, $625, $523.50 and $510.80, respectively.

Although the survey shows the smartphone prices in Taiwan are the third highest in the world. Taiwanese local telecommunication companies often offer specific smartphone plans to the customers. For example, prepaid plan, per-month paid plan or some other plans with a discounts for smartphones.

Many netizens have designed charts to compare the smartphone prices of different companies. These charts show some plan, as those of Chunghwa Telecom, offer smartphones and tablets at lower prices or even without any payment. As a result, we can figure out that smartphones that are bundled with fees and monthly charges with contracts can be much cheaper than the price for buying phones without any service.

According to telecom firm sales representatives, prices for smartphones are based on the subsidies given by handset makers and on their sales commissions. And the local telecommunication companies said that the prices for smartphones are based on what consumers are willing to pay, market sizes, currency exchange rates and other factors.

A manager of Taiwan-based smartphones manufacturer HTC responded to Taiwan's third place in the prices for smartphones. He said that the firm adopted the global unified prices, and that it would value the opinions of Taiwanese consumers and was willing to change to satisfy its customers' demands.
