Lakers Say No Deal Reached with Byron Scott Yet

The management of the Los Angeles Lakers has kept their lips sealed with regard to the reported hiring of Byron Scott as its new head coach.

Over the weekend, Scott confirmed that he agreed to the terms the Lakers management set to become its next head coach of the team.

ESPN.com reported last week that Scott will sign a four-year contract worth US$17 million, with the last year being a team option.

"I always wanted to coach the Lakers," Scott told a local CBS affiliate when reached for a reaction Saturday night. "This is a dream come true."

But Mitch Kupchak, general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, and owners' Jeanie and Jim Buss have yet to confirm Scott's hiring, extending further the woes of the team that posted one of its worst seasons in franchise history last year.

Scott has long been considered by the Lakers for the head-coaching job after the team parted their ways with Mike D'Antoni, who resigned in April after one of the worst seasons for LA.

He was seen as a front-runner for the job. Aside from his reputation as a three-time champion and his familiarity with the team after working as an analyst for the team last season at the Lakers television station, Scott is known to be close with Kobe Bryant, who was a rookie during the former's final season in 1996.

Bryant has been pretty open about wanting Scott to be the Lakers' next head coach. "We've had a tremendously close relationship throughout the years," said Bryant.
